Natural Resources Law Teachers

A Natural Resources Law Teachers Program was initiated in 1978 to improve law school education in natural resources. A teachers committee reviews law school programs and curricula, evaluates teaching materials and courses, makes recommendations for improvements, and serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas. Since 1981, the Foundation has co-sponsored biennial Institutes on Natural Resources Law Teaching with the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, The Center for American and International Law, and the Section on Environment, Energy and Resources of the American Bar Association.

The Clyde O. Martz Teaching Awards were introduced in 1994. The first awards were made to Professors Williams, Maxwell, and Meyers (dec'd.) for their book, The Law of Oil and Gas, originally published in 1956 and now in its sixth edition, and for their many subsequent contributions to scholarship in this area.

The second Clyde O. Martz Teaching Award was made in 1998 to Professor Ernest E. Smith for his lifelong dedication and many contributions to natural resources law teaching and scholarship.

The third Clyde O. Martz Teaching Awards were made in 2004 to Professor Harrison (Hap) C. Dunning and Don H. Sherwood (former Adjunct, Denver) for excellence in teaching.

The fourth and fifth Clyde O. Martz Teaching Awards were made in 2007 to Professors Bruce M. Kramer and Robert E. Beck for excellence in teaching.
