The Land Manager implements the exploration strategies through acquiring and maintaining title required to achieve the RTX goals of delivering resources to Rio Tinto through discovery, joint venture, and acquisition.
This role provides a full spectrum of land support to the regional exploration teams by:
- Negotiating and delivering agreements for privately owned lands or in accordance with governing
- legal requirements associated with government-owned lands and minerals.
- Maintaining land and mineral rights whether acquired, under agreement, or pursuant to law.
- Divesting lands
Qualifications:
- Related Bachelors Degree or equivalent required
- Minimum 8 years related land experience including senior roles, in a resource environment,
- with experience in exploration and or mining or legal roles or an equivalent combination of
- training and experience are necessary .
- In-depth understanding of the appropriate mineral/land rights and related legislation within
- their jurisdictions.
- Established contacts, operational skills and reputation within relevant local
- community/indigenous groups.
- Comprehensive knowledge and operational experience with regulations.
- In-depth understanding of related regulations as they impact upon land tenure (eg Environmental,
- heritage, local government and commercial implications).
- In-depth understanding of industry codes of conduct across all states/countries/ bases in
- their jurisdiction.
- Functional understanding of RTX accounting and financial reporting systems.
- In-depth understanding of related legal processes.
- In-depth understanding of commercial/banking issues relating to bonds, guarantees, securities,
- powers of attorney, caveats, statutory declarations and mortgages.
- In-depth understanding of land administration systems throughout their jurisdictions.
- Exposure to engagement with NGOs and external stakeholders.
- Exposure to multi-country, multi-commodity, exposure to multi-disciplines.

GC Type Role for Attorney (1/28/10)
Congo
International firm is looking for an attorney with at least 5 years of transactional experience to work on a copper mining project in the Congo. The person should be fluent in French and English and can be based out of any of the firm’s offices. The firm needs someone who can spend significant amounts of time in the Congo and can take on a leadership role as well. The firm envisions that this person will originally start out in one of the firm’s state side offices to be trained prior to going to Africa. Currently, the firm has several other attorneys involved so it could be on a rotating basis. Mining and/or oil/gas experience is preferred as is someone who has previous experience in Africa or another developing country. Qualifications:
This position requires a minimum of five years experience with a law firm or corporate law department. Environmental and/or regulatory background, with a basic understanding of the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. A familiarity with the potential regulation of green house gas would be helpful. Strong negotiating skills are also required.
An understanding of oil and gas industry business processes is highly preferred. The ability to approach problems from both a technical and a business perspective is required.
This position requires strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) and team building skills. Proficiency with the MicroSoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
Responsibilities:
This position is chiefly responsible for advising management regarding compliance with state and federal regulation of air, waste and water and representation of the business before regulatory agencies, including administrative appeals of agency decisions.
Education:
This position requires a Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. law school.
Grade and salary will be commensurate with relevant education and experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
Licensed to practice law in the state of Texas.
Travel Requirements:
The percentage of travel required for this position is 10-25%.
