SHERWOOD'S INDEX TO AND OUTLINE OF
MORRISON'S MINING REPORTS

by Don H. Sherwood of the Denver Bar

OUTLINE OF THE ORIGINAL SIXTEEN-VOLUME SET

The system used in this Outline is:

BOLD ALL CAPITALS indicates major topics devoted to public-land mining-law subjects.

Bold Upper- and Lower-Case suggests topics devoted to subjects of interest peripheral to the major topics.

Some topics have been selected because important mining cases were assigned by Morrison to them; when thus selected here, all cases collected within that topic are indexed (unless expressly stated otherwise).

Cases appearing under any of the headings indexed herein are identified by the initial names of the parties searchable in short-form, that is, by a single word (or at most two) in almost all cases.

In subsequent sections supplementing this Outline, the cases are indexed alphabetically and by jurisdiction, but in this system a reversed case-name index is not necessary to locate a case known only by the name of the second party, because the name of either party can be searched.

To distinguish one case from another, the jurisdiction and the year of decision are given; in the rare instances where all of this information is the same, parenthetical superscript numbers warn of possible duplication. In that regard, it is worthwhile to remember that in the years covered by this Outline, it was fairly common for separate cases in equity and at law to be reported under identical case names.

Hyphenated page numbers give the coverage devoted to the subject listed. Colons identify the first page of each indexed case, and parentheses indicate the pages on which topics not indexed herein begin.

Topics not indexed herein are nonetheless listed (in plain lettering), and those topic headings can be traced through the twenty-two volumes of Morrison's Mining Reports using this Outline.

Cases from the original sixteen volumes not generally useful today are not indexed herein, because a table of all cases in the original set appears in the sixteenth volume at pages 675-693. All cases in the six supplemental volumes, however, are indexed herein at least in the Appendix hereto.
